Phytochemical extraction methods: from traditional to modern techniques
Abstract
A core area of modern investigation in the cross-disciplinary approaches of biology, analytical and applied chemistry, and biotechnology is the progress of maintainable and ecologically friendly systems for extracting biological products. The main objective of “Green Extraction” is to minimize or eradicate the demand for energy and the utilization of extractive solvent derivatives from petroleum. These methods comprised ultrasound, accelerated solvent, microwave, supercritical fluid, and enzyme-assisted extraction methods, which gained major importance. This chapter outlines the different extraction techniques used to acquire the phytochemicals. These extraction techniques comprised the traditional solvent-based and the green and modern extraction techniques. Here, the recent applications of these techniques on some phytochemicals were summarized, and we analyzed the extraction conditions, advantages, and drawbacks of these tools.\r\n
