Introduction

At Knowledge University (KNU), maintaining high standards of teaching and learning is a core institutional priority. Class observation is a key quality assurance practice designed to support academic staff, enhance teaching effectiveness, and ensure a consistent, student-centered learning experience. This process is conducted in a constructive and developmental manner, focusing on continuous improvement rather than evaluation alone, and aligns with both national accreditation requirements and international best practices.

1. Purpose

The purpose of class observation at Knowledge University (KNU) is to:

  • Enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
  • Support academic staff in improving pedagogical practices.
  • Ensure alignment with institutional standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Promote continuous professional development.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All full-time and part-time academic staff.
  • All undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Both physical and online (LMS-based) teaching environments.

3. Objectives

Class observation aims to:

  • Monitor teaching effectiveness and student engagement.
  • Ensure proper implementation of course learning outcomes.
  • Promote best practices in teaching, assessment, and classroom management.
  • Provide constructive feedback for improvement.

4. Types of Observation

  • Scheduled Observation: Pre-arranged and communicated in advance.
  • Unscheduled Observation: Conducted without prior notice (for QA purposes).
  • Peer Observation: Conducted by colleagues within the same department.
  • QA Observation: Conducted by DQA or designated QA coordinators.

5. Observation Criteria

Observers will evaluate teaching based on:

A. Planning and Preparation

  • Clear learning objectives.
  • Structured lesson plan.
  • Alignment with syllabus.

B. Teaching Delivery

  • Clarity of explanation.
  • Use of appropriate teaching methods.
  • Use of technology (e.g., LMS, presentations).

C. Student Engagement

  • Interaction and participation.
  • Encouragement of critical thinking.
  • Inclusiveness.

D. Assessment and Feedback

  • Use of formative assessment.
  • Immediate feedback to students.
  • Alignment with learning outcomes.

E. Classroom Management

  • Time management.
  • Organization.
  • Professional conduct.

6. Observation Process

  1. Pre-Observation (optional)
    • Discussion of lesson objectives and materials.
  2. Observation
    • Observer attends the class (typically 30–60 minutes).
    • Uses standardized observation form.
  3. Post-Observation Feedback
    • Constructive feedback session within 3–5 working days.
    • Strengths and areas for improvement discussed.
  4. Documentation
    • Reports submitted to the Department and DQA.
    • Records maintained for quality monitoring.

7. Frequency

  • Each academic staff member should be observed:
    • At least once per semester (minimum).
    • New staff: twice per semester.

8. Roles and Responsibilities

A. Directorate of Quality Assurance (DQA)

  • Develop and update observation tools.
  • Monitor implementation.
  • Ensure fairness and consistency.

B. College/Department QA Coordinators

  • Schedule observations.
  • Conduct or assign observers.
  • Report findings to DQA.

C. Observers

  • Conduct objective and professional evaluations.
  • Provide constructive feedback.

D. Academic Staff

  • Cooperate with observation process.
  • Reflect on feedback and improve teaching practices.

9. Confidentiality and Ethics

  • Observation results are confidential.
  • Used only for quality improvement (not punitive purposes).
  • Feedback must be respectful, objective, and professional.

10. Continuous Improvement

  • Results of observations contribute to:
    • Staff development programs.
    • Training workshops.
    • Institutional quality enhancement strategies.

11. Review of Policy

This policy will be reviewed annually by the Directorate of Quality Assurance to ensure alignment with:

  • National accreditation standards.
  • International best practices.
