Synthesis of azo compounds containing salicylic acid and its derivatives: A review

Abstract
Azo compound derivatives are a highly important class of organic compounds that\r\ncontain a nitrogen-nitrogen double bond. They have been the focus of continuous\r\nscientific research. The most common method for synthesizing these compounds\r\ninvolves the reaction of an aromatic amine with a diazonium salt. Starting materials\r\nsuch as salicylic acid, 3-ASA, 4-ASA, 5-ASA, and their derivatives are commonly\r\nused in this synthesis. The first step in the synthesis is to convert the amine group\r\nof the starting material into a diazonium salt using sodium nitrite and hydrochloric\r\nacid. The second step involves a coupling reaction between the diazonium salt and\r\nsalicylic acid or its derivatives. This review emphasizes the synthesis of a wide\r\nrange of azo compounds due to their diverse applications as synthetic materials,\r\nartificial acceptors, molecular ligands, and agrochemicals. These compounds have\r\nparticularly strong biological actions, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial,\r\nantifungal, antiviral, and antidiabetic properties.
