Investigating the impact of modulation peak current in improving the performance of OFDM‑RoF system‑based VCSEL for 5G system

Abstract
The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system and coherence detection are seen as \r\na promising technology that increases the speed of digital \r\ndata transmission in radio over fiber (RoF) technology. This \r\ngroundbreaking research combines an OFDM RoF system, \r\ncoherent optical detection, and a vertical cavity surface \r\nemitting laser (VCSEL) with external optical modulations. \r\nPrior until recently, OFDM RoF used optical sources like \r\nContinuous-Wave lasers (CW lasers). A specific modulation peak current selection is used in the design of the pro-\r\nposed OFDM RoF-VCSEL to enhance system performance. \r\nData signals with different bit rates are mapped by M-QAM \r\nencoders before being converted to OFDM signals. In the \r\nsame setup, a CW-laser is utilized in lieu of the VCSEL to \r\ncompare the transmitted signal characteristics of the two \r\ntypes of VCSELs: the OFDM RoF-based VCSEL and the \r\nconventional VCSEL. The proposed system of an OFDM-\r\nbased VCSEL with 4-QAM effectively allowed transmission lengths of up to 13,000 km with 10 Gbps and 2,000 km
