Serological Diagnosis and Epidemiological impact of Helicobacter pylori infection on human health in Diyala Governorate, Iraq
Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common\r\nbacterial stomach infections and is implicated in a majority of\r\nstomach and duodenum ulcer as well as may be gastric\r\ncancer. The study showed that the incidence in Diyala is\r\nnearly high compared with the surrounding, little known\r\nabout H. pylori prevalence in this population or other Native\r\ncommunities. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine\r\nthe prevalence of H. pylori among people subjects of different\r\nage groups ranged between 1 year to >50 years old. Two\r\nhundred and fifty blood samples were collected from\r\npatients admitted to Teaching hospitals in Baqubaa city and\r\nsubjected to a serological screening test.\r\nThe results revealed that the prevalence of H. pylori antibodies\r\nin human blood samples was 75.2%. the results appeared\r\nthat H. pylori in males were more infected than females at\r\na rate 78.1% among males compared with females infection\r\nrate was 70%. The study also showed that the high prevalence\r\nrate of H. pylori antibody in the blood of patient’s age group\r\n31-40 years was (77.8%), followed by the age group of 41-50\r\nyears (76.2%). Regarding risk factors, smoker males were the\r\nmost infected with H. pylori (78.4%) compared to smoker\r\nfemales (31.7%). The results concluded that, the\r\nseroprevalence of H. pylori among humans in Diyala\r\nGovernorate was very high, and the infection occurred at all\r\nages, particularly the youth ages.
