Erbil, Kurdistan Region
As part of the ongoing activities of the College of Law at Knowledge University, a workshop titled "The Negative Role of Media in Increasing Crime Rates" was held on Sunday in the university library hall. The event, which commenced at 10:30 a.m., aimed to shed light on the potential harms caused by irresponsible media practices and their impact on individuals, society, and legal institutions.
The workshop featured three thought-provoking presentations delivered by faculty members from the Department of Law:
Asst. Lect. Halale Sulaiman Rahman opened the session with a discussion on "The Harms of the Negative Role of Media on the Personal Rights of Institutions." Rahman emphasized how media misrepresentation can damage institutional reputations and infringe upon personal and organizational rights, often leading to legal challenges.
Mr. Hamad Karim Hamad followed with a presentation on "The Psychological and Social Harms of the Media." He explored how sensationalized reporting and misinformation can contribute to societal anxiety, erosion of trust, and the normalization of criminal behavior.
Lect. Hind Abdulamir Hamid concluded the session with a talk on "Causes and Solutions for the Bad Role of the Media." She highlighted the root causes of negative media practices, including lack of ethical standards, sensationalism, and profit-driven motives. Hamid proposed practical solutions to transform media into a tool for positive societal impact.
The workshop also delved into the dual role of media in shaping societal norms and legal awareness. Participants engaged in discussions on how media can transition from a source of misinformation and conflict to a platform that promotes awareness, social security, and respect for individual and institutional rights.
Attendees, including university students and faculty, left with a deeper understanding of how media can either foster societal harmony or contribute to rising crime rates when used irresponsibly. The workshop underscored the urgent need for ethical media practices and proper dissemination of information to mitigate its negative impacts on society and the legal system.
