Rebuilding Syria\'s mental health system after decades of war
Abstract
After decades of war, Syria transitioned to a new Government at the end of 2024, creating opportunities to rebuild the nation\'s infrastructure, including its mental health system.\r\nA 2021 study showed that of 1951 participants living in Syria, 44% likely had a severe mental health disorder as a result of war and other factors such as low social support.1 Mass killings, systematic torture, sexual violence, and other violations experienced in detention facilities, coupled with displacement and loss of property, loved ones, and dignity, have deeply affected individuals’ psychological wellbeing.2\r\nTo protect future generations, investments in the mental health system should address transgenerational trauma through psychoeducation for parents, caregivers, and schools, as well as ensure early interventions for exposed children (appendix).
