Department Description

With Iraq being one of the prominent oil-producing countries, the petroleum industry within the nation is one of the main contributors to the country’s GDP. Petroleum Engineers are required by such industry to provide the manufacturers the oil and gas needed to produce more than three hundred products we use every day such as cosmetics, medicines, plastics and textiles. Some of the products that are derived from petroleum include kerosene, propane, heating oil, diesel fuel and jet fuel just to name a few. 

The department offers four-year bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering. Such degree would enable graduates to work as petroleum engineers for oil and gas companies. The Department of Petroleum Engineering and Knowledge University is an exciting and stimulating place for learning. Our staff are innovative and creative practitioners who offer expertise in their field and bring their own energy and enthusiasm to their work. The laboratories within the department offers access to one of the best facilities and equipment in the region (see our labs).

The Department’s vision is to be recognized as one of the top teaching and research petroleum engineering departments in Kurdistan and the region, identifying and responding to the current and contemporary issues in the field.

MISSION

The Department’s mission is to equip petroleum engineering students with the knowledge, skills, and capabilities, graduating job-ready petroleum engineers who are well recognized as active citizens and professionals in their communities, can lead and compete in an increasingly complex and competitive industry and job market, and who are sought-after practitioners in Kurdistan and the world.

JOB PROSPECTS

KNU graduates' knowledge and skills embody principles like effective communication, critical thinking and project management skills are central to most careers. The study of petroleum engineering courses and the practical program at KNU equips you with these skills and more, which will be translated readily into any work context. Apart from your knowledge of crude oil and natural gas, you will leave with the confidence and skills that come from successfully completing a demanding course and participating fully in university life.
