Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic Gram-negative, S-curved bacterium. H. pylori is the first formally recognized bacterial carcinogen linked to gastritis, duodenal ulcer, gastric carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid malignancies. It is one of the most successful human pathogens, as over half of the world's population is colonized with this species.
The epidemiological studies have shown that H. pylori prevalence ranges from 20-50% in the adult populations of the developed world but the occurrence is much more in the developing countries with prevalence is high as 90% in some countries.
There are several laboratory methods that have become available to diagnose H. pylori infection over the last three decades. These methods are divided in two main groups: invasive and non-invasive. Invasive diagnostic tests comprise endoscopic image, histology (microscopy), rapid urease test, culture, and molecular methods; all these techniques require endoscopy to obtain biopsy materials. Non-invasive diagnostic tests included stool antigen test, serology-based tests, urea breath test, and molecular examinations .
